Student Phishing Scam

Six people have been arrested in connection with a phishing scam that conned students out of £1million. Three arrests were made in London, the remainder in Manchester and Bolton.
The gang targeted those in receipt of student finance by sending fake emails requesting that they update their bank details. The personal information gathered was then used to withdraw money from accounts across the UK.

Michael Barrymore Appears at Ealing Magistrates Court

Michael Barrymore today appeared at Ealing Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine. The charge followed his arrest in Acton on 22nd November after his Citroen DS3 hit a kerb.

A further charge of being drunk and disorderly was withdrawn.

He was fined a total of £780.

Mammoth Wedding.....

Try getting to the buffet at possibly one of the biggest weddings ever held. 100,000 guests (and that is not a mistake) are expected to attend tomorrow's wedding of Prateek Yadav and Aparna Bisht in Safai, Northern India. They are the son and daughter of two of India's most distinguished families and the event is expected to attract India's glitterati.

National Strikes Tomorrow.

The major public sector unions have ballotted to walk out in nationwide industrial action tomorrow, the 30th of November. Amongst strikers are university lecturers so there may be some disruption to classes on Wednesday. Student's affected would have been contacted by their faculties so check out your student webmail and Blackboard to see if you are affected.
The university campus will be open as usual all day tomorrow.

Leveson Inquiry Continues

The Leveson inquiry into press culture, practices, and ethics continues today at the High Court. Among those giving evidence will be Charlotte Church, Anne Diamond, and Chris Jefferies, the former landlord of Joanna Yeates. His character was widely attacked in the press following his arrest on suspicion of her murder. After being cleared of any involvement he received libel payments from eight newspapers.

Wales Manager Found Dead

Wales football manager Gary Speed was found hanged at his home this morning at the age of 42. Cheshire Police have confirmed that the body of the father-of-two was discovered at his address on the outskirts of Chester and have said there were "no suspicious circumstances".

Freddie Mercury

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury. One of our alumni, he studied at the then Ealing College of Art. It was a fellow student at Ealing College who introduced him to both Brian May and Roger Taylor. Going on to form Queen they produced 18 number one albums and 18 number one singles.
For the uninitiated the UWL Students Union bar is named Freddie's in his honour.

Ealing Riots Murder - 16 Year Old To Appear At Old Bailey

A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will tomorrow appear at the Old Bailey in a pre-trial hearing. He is charged with the murder of Ealing pensioner Richard Mannington Bowes, who died from head injuries 3 days after being attacked as he tried to put out a fire during the riots. The teenager is also charged with burglary and violent disorder and will appear alongside his mother who is charged with perverting the course of justice. It is reported that his mother tried to cover up his involvement in the incident.

Occupy LSX movement 'reposses' UBS office building.

The Occupy LSX movement gained access to an abandoned UBS building in Hackney on Thursday Night.
A spokesperson for the group had this to say "As banks repossess families’ homes, empty bank property needs to be repossessed by the public, We hope this is the first in a wave of ‘public repossessions’ of property belonging to the companies that crashed the global economy."

Although the group are not planning to camp in this property they are planning to open the building this Saturday as a 'Bank of Ideas' and plan to use it as a venue to host discussions and other events.

The occupied building is on Sun Street in Hackney.

St Paul's - Real Eviction Threat

The anti-capitalist protest may not make it to Xmas as originally planned. Baliffs have today attached notes to tents informing protestors that they have until 6pm tomorrow to leave or face eviction. If they fail to move the City of London Corporation will launch a High Court action.

Organisers are not worried - they say protestors intend to stay and they will contest any action.

Protest March Against Fees - TODAY

Organised by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts - 10,000 students are expected to take part in today's rally against fees. Starting at University of London, the plan is to reach Moorgate Junction by 3.30pm. Occupy London protestors will be joining the march.

If you are going along you should assemble at Malet Street by 12.00pm.
